Soil gas, pressure differentials, airflow through a building. Most people doing this work in the Charlotte market learned it in a short course. Russell studied it.
He holds a B.S. in Environmental Engineering with a minor in Atmospheric Science and a radon certificate from CERTI in Colorado, and he has more than 20 years of hands-on work in soil vapor extraction, the same discipline used to pull contaminated vapor out of the ground on commercial and industrial sites. A residential radon system is that discipline scaled down to one house. Soil vapor extraction is also the background behind his vapor intrusion work: keeping VOCs and other soil gases from contamination out of the buildings above.
The practical difference shows up in the number. The EPA action level is 4.0 pCi/L and most companies guarantee that. Russell guarantees below 3.0 and aims for under 2.0, because he designs the system for the house instead of installing the same kit in every one.
